Program Description
The mission of the JROTC Department is "To motivate our cadets to be better citizens." The Department teaches a wide range of subjects designed to reinforce other areas of the academic curriculum such as study skills, communications, leadership, management, resume writing/career search techniques and citizenship. In addition, the JROTC program exposes our cadets to some basic life and military skills which will serve them well upon graduation. These include: problem solving and time management skills, race relations, drug and alcohol abuse prevention, personal fitness through proper diet and exercise, map reading, orienteering, and military drill. The JROTC Program also provides cadets the opportunity to participate in a variety of competitive activities, such as Drill Teams, Marksmanship Teams, and Adventure Training. The focus of the program is to develop within our cadets a sense of personal pride in a job well done, team work, self-discipline, and the desire to do the right thing.

Carson Long Military Institute offers a wide range of varsity and intramural sports. The school philosophy states that every cadet should have the opportunity to take part in sports regardless of his athletic ability. The Kate Carson Gymnasium contains three newly renovated basketball courts, the athletic director's office, lockers, and showers. It also has dressing rooms for visiting and home teams. On campus are five tennis courts and fields for football, soccer, baseball, track, and intramural athletics.

The school competes on the interscholastic level with other independent schools. The interscholastic sports are football, soccer, basketball, baseball, track, rifle, cross country, and tennis. Intramural sports include basketball, touch football, frisbee football, dodgeball, volleyball, softball, and table tennis.

Recognizing that a complete educational program extends beyond the classroom, Carson Long schedules a variety of informative and entertaining activities. Instructors take advantage of educational opportunities in the area, planning class trips to Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Hershey, Gettysburg and Washington, D.C. Smaller groups have attended events at nearby Dickinson College. College-bound seniors and juniors attend a fall college fair at Harrisburg Area Community College. Senior English students visit the Capitol Campus' Heindel Library-the second largest library in the Pennsylvania State University system.
